When is the best time to experience Argentina and Chile Patagonia Hiking with Premier Lodging?

This itinerary runs from November through March, Patagonia's prime season for trekking. MT Sobek carefully plans each year to ensure hikers can experience Patagonia across a range of ideal seasons, from spring wildflowers to the vibrant foliage of autumn.

Spring Season (November to Early December): Hike among abundant wildflowers with maximum daylight hours and fewer travelers—ideal for those seeking a trail experience with fewer other visitors compared to peak season.

Peak Summer Trekking (Late December to February): Benefit from the season's warmest temperatures and longest daylight hours, as well as the lively atmosphere in towns like El Calafate and El Chalten.

Autumn Foliage (March): Witness the dramatic shift to fall colors starting in mid-March as peak season crowds begin to disperse—this time of year is particularly beloved by photographers.

What is the group size for this trip?

The typical group size for this trip is between 6 and 16 guests, creating an experience that feels personal, relaxed, and thoughtfully paced. Small group travel allows us to share moments that make a journey truly memorable.

Our intentionally small groups allow for a more intimate experience with the people and wildlife we encounter. This size also enables our expert guides to take advantage of unexpected opportunities and invitations that would be impossible with larger groups.

What is the minimum age for this trip?

The standard minimum age for this trip is 18. This itinerary is designed with adult travelers in mind, based on daily activity levels, accommodations, and overall group experience. Families or groups with children as young as 14 should check out our private departures .

What makes this a Level 3 trip?

A Level 3 rating defines a moderate challenge suitable for those in good physical shape who enjoy consistent activity. This trip features six active hiking days, including four primary days of 8 to 12 miles. Most days the hikes have under 1,000 feet in elevation gain and loss. There are two days with optional hikes involving 1,250 to 1,800 feet of elevation gain and loss (on Days 2 and 3), and these options are over relatively long distances of 12 miles, so do not feel overly strenuous. For added flexibility, shorter hiking options are available on Day 2 and Day 3 for those who prefer a more relaxed pace. Throughout, you'll navigate rocky terrain, including hiking amid some large boulders and over exposed tree roots, and Patagonia's notoriously strong, unpredictable winds.

Sustained Trail Days: You will complete four primary days of hiking, covering distances of 8 to 12 miles per day over mountain terrain, interspersed with shorter excursions and walks across two additional hiking days.

Moderate Elevation: Most days feature elevation changes under 1,000 feet, with two specific days offering optional routes involving 1,250 to 1,800 feet of total gain and loss.

Uneven Footing: The terrain is often rocky and uneven, requiring balance while walking amid large boulders and over exposed tree roots in the native forests of Los Glaciares.

Environmental Exposure: Patagonia's weather can change drastically, requiring mental and physical resilience against rapid temperature fluctuations and very strong winds that may require kneeling for stability.

Will the itinerary change?

We plan the itinerary carefully, but adjustments may be needed due to weather, trail conditions, or other factors. MT Sobek and our guides make thoughtful decisions when needed in real time to keep the experience safe and enjoyable, and any significant changes will be communicated as early and as clearly as possible.

Because weather can change drastically and unexpectedly in Patagonia, we must sometimes adjust vehicle transfers or the timing of daily activities. We ask that you arrive with a spirit of adventure and a willingness to be flexible as we navigate these natural conditions.

Arriving and Departing
Where does the trip start and end?
The trip starts in El Calafate, Argentina, and ends in Puerto Natales, Chile. What airport should I fly into and out of?
You should fly into El Calafate Airport (FTE) in Argentina. For your return, we recommend scheduling your departing flight from Puerto Natales Airport (PNT) in Chile. If suitable flights from Puerto Natales are unavailable, we can arrange a transfer to Punta Arenas Airport (PUQ) for an additional cost. When should I book my flights?
Please check with your Adventure Coordinator before purchasing your flights, as many factors affect the decision to confirm a trip. We can typically confirm whether your trip will run well in advance, but in some cases, the final decision is made just prior to your final payment date. When should I arrive and depart?

Once your booking is finalized and your trip is confirmed to operate, you may purchase your flights. Be sure to consult with your Adventure Coordinator regarding current trip status before booking non-refundable travel.

Arrival: Fly into El Calafate Airport (FTE) no later than 1:40 pm on Day 1 to join our 2:30 pm three-hour group transfer to El Chalten. We recommend arriving in Argentina at least one day early to rest and ensure you are in El Calafate for the transfer.

Important Note for Arrival and Transit in Buenos Aires: Most flights to El Calafate connect via Buenos Aires, which has two airports: Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport (EZE) and Jorge Newbery Airport (AEP). These airports are about a 1-hour drive apart; if you must switch between them, please allow at least 4 hours of connecting time to cover immigration, baggage claim, and travel. Your Adventure Coordinator can assist with arranging a private transfer between these airports at an additional cost. When arriving in Buenos Aires you must clear immigration, collect your luggage, pass through customs, and then recheck your bags for your connecting flight.

Departure: You may schedule your departing flight from Puerto Natales Airport (PNT) for any time on Day 9, or a later date if you choose to extend your stay. If suitable flights from Puerto Natales are unavailable, we can arrange a private transfer from Tierra Patagonia to Punta Arenas Airport (PUQ) for an additional cost of $500 per vehicle for one to two guests. Please keep in mind that Punta Arenas is located about a 4.5-hour drive from the lodge.

Who will I meet on Day 1, and where?
You will meet your MT Sobek guide outside the baggage claim area at El Calafate Airport (FTE) for the group transfer to El Chalten. If you arrive in El Calafate early, we can provide a complimentary pick-up at your hotel to join the group transfer. Your Final Details email, sent about three weeks before departure, will include specific meet-up instructions and information on your guides. What hotels do you recommend if I arrive early or stay late?

If you are arriving early in El Calafate, we recommend the centrally located Hotel Posada Los Alamos or the lakeside Xelena Hotel and Suites . For those wishing to stay late in Torres del Paine, we recommend our group hotel, Tierra Patagonia . You can book these stays through your Adventure Coordinator or make the reservations directly with the hotels.

If you plan to spend time in Buenos Aires before the trip, we suggest Legado Mitico in Palermo Soho or the luxury Alvear Palace Hotel in Recoleta.

Do I need a passport or visa for this trip?

A valid passport is required to enter Argentina and Chile. Most countries require that passports be valid for at least six months beyond the end of your trip and contain at least one blank page for entry stamps.

US citizens do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. You will be issued a Tourist Card when entering Chile, which you must keep with your passport to present upon departure. Non-US citizens should consult their local embassy or consulate to confirm current entry requirements.

Transportation and Transfers
Are airport transfers included?
One group transfer is provided on Day 1, departing El Calafate Airport at 2:30 pm. If you are staying in El Calafate before Day 1, we can provide a complimentary pick-up at your hotel in El Calafate on Day 1, for you to join the group transfer from El Calafate to El Chalten. At the end of the trip, complimentary transfers to Puerto Natales Airport are provided according to your flight departure date and time. Transfers outside of these scheduled windows or to Punta Arenas are not included and may involve additional costs. Can MT Sobek help arrange a private transfer?
Yes. If you arrive early in El Calafate, we can arrange a private transfer from the airport to your hotel at an additional cost. We can also arrange private transfers between the two airports in Buenos Aires or from Tierra Patagonia to Punta Arenas if needed. Please contact your Adventure Coordinator for assistance with these arrangements. How much time will we spend in vehicles during the trip?
Most days are focused on active exploration rather than long drives. You will typically experience scenic transfers of 2.5 to 3 hours between major locations, such as the drive from El Calafate to El Chalten. These drives through the Patagonian steppe offer spectacular scenery and excellent opportunities to spot wildlife like guanacos and condors. Are there any especially long travel days?
Yes. Day 6 involves a 5- to 6-hour private van transfer for the journey from EOLO in Argentina to Tierra Patagonia in Chile. While this is the longest travel day, it is often a highlight for guests due to the beautiful landscapes and common sightings of guanacos, condors, foxes, and other local fauna - even pumas if you're lucky!Fitness, Terrain and Trail Expectations
How difficult is the activity on Argentina and Chile Patagonia Hiking with Premier Lodging?

This Level 3 adventure is designed for fit hikers who enjoy active days in a rugged mountain environment. You should expect to spend six to seven hours on the trail during four primary hiking days, covering 8 to 12 miles. For flexibility, shorter hiking options are available on Day 2 and Day 3 to match your preferred level of challenge.

Vertical Intensity: While most daily hikes involve gains under 1,000 feet, optional treks on Day 2 and Day 3 reach up to 1,800 feet of elevation gain and loss over 12 miles.

Terrain Challenge: You'll navigate rocky, uneven surfaces, with some segments requiring balance amid large boulders and over exposed tree roots.

Flexible Activity: Shorter hiking options are available on Day 2 and Day 3 to match your preferred level of challenge. On Days 7 and 8 guests are welcome to join a shorter portion of the hikes, and circle back to the trailhead early with one of the guides. It's also an option to skip a hike, instead relaxing at Tierra or potentially joining alternate activities offered by Tierra (though these are not accompanied by your MT Sobek guides).

Do I need prior experience?
Prior hiking experience and adequate training are necessary to enjoy this trip. No previous experience is needed for the optional horseback riding at EOLO, and helmets and chaps are provided. How should I train or prepare for Argentina and Chile Patagonia Hiking with Premier Lodging?

Preparing for Patagonia requires building a strong cardiovascular foundation and conditioning your legs for rocky, uneven trails. We recommend starting your training at least six months in advance, focusing on consistent aerobic activity and hiking on hills. Steady preparation over time will make a meaningful difference in both comfort and enjoyment on the trail.

Cardio Base: Engage in several weekly sessions of walking, biking, or swimming for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity.

Hill Conditioning: Incorporate hikes of 2 to 4 miles or 40 minutes of aerobic activity twice per week, ideally on hilly terrain or stairs to prepare for mountain slopes. Be sure to include plenty of downhill conditioning, as long descents are a part of this itinerary and can be as demanding as the climbs.

Gear Readiness: Use your training sessions to break in your waterproof hiking boots and trekking poles, and to get comfortable with your daypack.

Is there exposure or technical terrain on Argentina and Chile Patagonia Hiking with Premier Lodging?
There are no sheer drop-offs or dangerous exposure on this itinerary. The terrain is primarily rocky and uneven, with some short but steep ascents, particularly on the climb to the Cerro Torre lookout on Day 2. Your expert guides are skilled at managing the group's pace and will provide support across all trail conditions. Can I move at my own pace?
We hike as a group with a steady, supported pace and regular breaks. Our guides support different walking speeds within reason, and groups can spread out along the trail to an extent to accommodate varying hiking pace, with a guide at the front and a guide at the back. The group will naturally come back together for breaks as we go.What if I want to skip a day?
On days when you return to the same accommodation, you are welcome to relax at the hotel or enjoy the spa facilities. On travel days or point-to-point transfers like Day 6, the group moves together between lodges. How much free time will I have?
Your days are centered around spectacular hiking and scenic journeys, but we have built in time for relaxation before dinner each evening. You'll find opportunities to enjoy the lively local brewery in El Chalten, indulge in a massage or spa treatment at EOLO, or relax in the indoor heated pool and sauna at Tierra Patagonia before gourmet group dinners. What is the horseback riding like?
The optional horseback riding at EOLO on the afternoon of Day 4 is a relaxing group activity designed to let you experience the beauty of the Patagonian steppe from a classic perspective. No previous riding experience is needed to participate. You will set out on a gentle two-hour ride into the valley toward the nearby Flamingoes Lagoon, which offers wide-open views of Anita's Valley and the surrounding mountain ranges. All necessary gear, including helmets and chaps, is provided for your comfort and safety. If you prefer not to ride, our guide team can show you the trailhead for a scenic, independent hike up the slopes of Cerro Frias instead.Accommodations and Meals
What should I expect from accommodations on this trip?
Accommodations on this trip are hand-picked to provide a mix of prime location and exceptional luxury. You will stay in a comfortable 4-star boutique hotel overlooking El Chalten, followed by two premier luxury lodges—EOLO in the Patagonian steppe and Tierra Patagonia in Torres del Paine. These properties are designed to help you connect with nature; therefore, none of the guest rooms feature TVs.Will I have access to Wi-Fi and electricity?
Yes. Wi-Fi is available free of charge at all hotels throughout the trip. At Los Cerros and EOLO, it is available throughout the property, while at Tierra Patagonia, it is limited to common areas. While most lodges have reliable power, the remote locations mean satellite internet may sometimes be slow. What meals are included?
All breakfasts, lunches and dinners are included, starting with dinner on Day 1 and concluding with breakfast on Day 9, as noted in your itinerary. We also provide snacks and water between meals during activities. What is the food like on Argentina and Chile Patagonia Hiking with Premier Lodging?

The cuisine is a memorable highlight, focused on modern Patagonian dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. Breakfasts are generous buffets with breads, pastries, and eggs. Lunches on the trail are typically bagged, and seated lunches are often gourmet level. Dinners are gourmet multi-course affairs, emphasizing Argentine beef and Chilean seafood, and always including tasty vegetarian options. To enhance your dining experience, a limited amount of local wine selected by your guides is included with all group lunches and dinners. During your stay at Tierra Patagonia, you'll enjoy the convenience of an open bar, which includes mineral water, soft drinks, juices, wine, and house spirits. Premium wines and spirits are also available for purchase.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes, we can accommodate many common restrictions on this trip with advance notice. Let us know about your dietary restrictions and food allergies as soon as possible, so we can coordinate with guides, hotels, and restaurants. Please also list these on your Participant Information Form.

Because this trip includes remote lodges and wilderness areas with limited kitchen facilities and supplies, flexibility is limited. We can generally accommodate dietary needs such as allergies, vegetarian/vegan diets, and low-gluten diets. However, a strict celiac diet is very difficult to manage on this trip because cross-contamination cannot be eliminated. Reach out to us to discuss options if you need a celiac diet. Personal preferences or highly specific requests may be harder to accommodate consistently.

Are single rooms available?

Yes, a limited number of single rooms are available on this trip. About a third of our travelers go solo, and single room inventory often books up quickly! You can find more information on solo traveler options here .

Are triple rooms available?
Triple rooms are not offered on this trip to ensure all accommodations meet MT Sobek standards for your comfort.Packing and Gear
What should I pack for Argentina and Chile Patagonia Hiking with Premier Lodging?
The key to comfort in Patagonia is dressing in layers. Focus on synthetic or wool fabrics that dry quickly and wick moisture away from the skin. Essential items include a waterproof, breathable rain jacket and pants, waterproof gloves, a medium-weight fleece or down jacket, and sturdy hiking boots. A detailed packing list will be provided.Do I need trekking poles or specialty gear?
Trekking poles are strongly recommended for balance and joint support on steep ascents and descents and on uneven, rocky terrain, and are not provided by MT Sobek on this trip. Collapsible trekking poles pack best for travel. Keep in mind that trekking poles typically need to travel in your checked luggage, rather than your carry-on bag. What size daypack should I bring?
A daypack with a 20- to 25-liter capacity is ideal. It should be large enough to carry your rain gear, a warm fleece, drinking water, sunscreen, and your picnic lunch each day. We also recommend bringing a waterproof rain cover to keep your gear dry during unexpected showers. Can I bring more than one bag?
Guests should plan to bring one main piece of luggage and a daypack. Because vehicle space is limited, packing efficiently is important. On this itinerary, luggage transfer is included, meaning your bags are moved from hotel to hotel while you hike—so you can focus on the trail, not your gear. Are there any seasonally required items?
Regardless of when you travel, you must be prepared for "four seasons in one day". Even in high summer, warm gloves and a wool or fleece hat are essential for cold mornings or high-wind conditions. Full rain protection is equally critical because mountain weather can shift unexpectedly. You should pack a high-quality, waterproof, and breathable rain jacket with a hood along with waterproof rain pants and waterproof gloves. What kind of footwear should I bring for this trip?
You will need sturdy, medium-weight, waterproof hiking boots with good lug soles and ankle support. Low-ankle running or trail shoes are not recommended for the rocky mountain terrain we will encounter. If you are purchasing new boots, it is essential to break them in completely before the trip to prevent blisters. Will I have access to laundry during the trip?
Yes, laundry service is available at each of the hotels. Please check with the front desk upon arrival for turnaround times, as they can vary. If you wish to hand-wash a few items, you may want to bring a travel clothesline and a small packet of biodegradable detergent.Should I bring a personal medical kit?
Yes. Your guide will also carry a first aid kit, but we recommend you bring your own supply of basics such as blister care, bandages, sunscreen, lip protection, and electrolytes to have handy. Please bring a sufficient supply of your personal medications.On-the-Ground Travel Tips
What is the weather like on Argentina and Chile Patagonia Hiking with Premier Lodging by month?

Patagonia's weather is famously unpredictable, often delivering multiple seasons in a single afternoon. While our trips operate during the warmest months, rapid temperature shifts are common, and the region is known for powerful winds, making versatile layering absolutely essential for your comfort.

Summer Highs (Late Dec to Feb): Expect longer days and daytime temperatures averaging 62 to 66°F, though intense sun and high-velocity winds can make the "real feel" fluctuate significantly.

Shoulder Season Cooling (Nov to early Dec and Mar): Temperatures dip into the high 50s°F; these periods feature the most dramatic light and either spring flowers or fall foliage but bring increased weather variability.

Crisp Alpine Nights: Regardless of the daily high, evening temperatures consistently drop into the low-to-mid 40s°F, requiring mid-weight insulation once the sun sets.

The Wind Factor: Frequent, strong winds are a constant, particularly in exposed areas like Laguna Torre, making windproof layers mandatory.

Regional Divergence: If traveling to Buenos Aires or Santiago before or after the tour, prepare for significantly warmer climates, typically 10 to 20°F higher than the Patagonian parks.

What currency should I bring?
In both Argentina and Chile, credit cards are widely accepted for purchases, and a debit card can be used to withdraw local currency from an ATM. El Calafate is the best place to do this—ATMs are uncommon in other areas in this itinerary—but be aware that ATMs may limit the amount you can withdraw. Will I have cell service?
Cell service is generally available in the towns of El Calafate, El Chalten, and Puerto Natales. However, there is no cell service in most of Los Glaciares National Park or Torres del Paine National Park. We recommend downloading maps and important information for offline access before you head into these remote areas. Will I need electrical adapters or a voltage converter?
Electricity in Argentina and Chile is 220 volts. Argentina primarily uses Type I (and occasionally Type C) adapters, while Chile usually uses Type C (and occasionally Type L). We recommend bringing a universal adapter or one of each type (Type I and Type C) to ensure you can charge your devices throughout the trip. How much extra money should I budget?
We recommend that you bring enough US cash with you for your planned tips for the guide team, plus a little extra ($600 to $800 per person is a good rough guideline). Bring new, untorn crisp bills, with a variety of denominations ($10s, $20s, $50s, $100s).How is tipping handled on this trip?

Tipping is a common practice to show appreciation for the hard work of your guides. On this adventure, we recommend tipping your MT Sobek Adventure Guide $20 to $30 per day, your Assistant Adventure Guide $20 to $25 per day, and the Tierra Patagonia team $25 to $35 per day. This typically totals $435 to $600 per participant, and we recommend using US dollars cash for all tips, distributed as outlined below.

MT Sobek Adventure Guide: US $180-$270 per trip participant ($20-$30 x 9 days)
Assistant Adventure Guide: US $180-$225 per trip participant ($20-$25 x 9 days)
Tierra Patagonia Team: US $75-$105 per trip participant ($25-$35 x 3 days)

Gratuities for drivers, hotel staff, and restaurant staff are already included in your trip price.

Health and Safety
Do you recommend travel insurance?

Yes, we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance for all trips. Travel insurance can help cover trip cancellations or interruptions, medical expenses, emergency evacuation, travel delays, and other unexpected situations. We offer travel insurance with Arch RoamRight and will be happy to provide you with a quote. Please see our Travel Resources page for more information.

Do I need to be cleared by a doctor to participate?
There is no standard required clearance from a doctor to participate in this trip. You will have an opportunity to discuss your fitness and preparedness for the trip with MT Sobek. If you have medical concerns or questions about fitness, consult your healthcare provider before traveling. What medical support is available during the trip?
Your Adventure Guides are responsible for the safety of all trip members and are trained to handle emergencies in the field. While they carry first aid kits, please be aware that hospital facilities can be far away and medical evacuation can be prolonged and difficult in remote areas. The nearest hospitals are in El Calafate and Puerto Natales. What kind of challenges should I expect on Argentina and Chile Patagonia Hiking with Premier Lodging?
The primary challenges include navigating rocky, uneven terrain and the region's famously powerful winds. Rapid temperature fluctuations can affect both body and morale, making proper layering and hydration essential. How can I stay healthy during the trip?

Staying healthy on this trip starts with pacing yourself and listening to your body, especially on consecutive hiking days. Hydration is key—drink regularly throughout the day and consider bringing electrolyte powders to help replace minerals lost through sweat. Water provided by your guides is safe to drink, and potable water is available at hotels. It is important to stay on top of your water intake.

Good foot care makes a big difference on a hiking-focused itinerary. Wear well-broken-in boots, change socks as needed, and address hot spots or blisters early using items like moleskin or hydrocolloid patches. Washing or sanitizing your hands frequently—especially before meals—and using hand sanitizer can also help prevent illness.

Address small issues early and communicate with your guides—they're there to help.

Trail Support and Emergencies
What if I have an emergency and need to be evacuated?
If you must leave the trip due to a medical emergency, your guides will coordinate the most appropriate response. Evacuation in Patagonia can be complex and expensive due to remote locations. For this reason, we highly recommend travel protection that specifically covers medical evacuation. Are bathrooms available on the trail?
Bathrooms are available at some trail points, but not everywhere. When facilities are unavailable, your guides will provide guidance on "leave no trace" principles to ensure we minimize our environmental impact while managing personal needs responsibly. What is the guide-to-guest ratio?
We provide one expert MT Sobek guide throughout your adventure, along with an additional local guide for all hiking days, to maintain our high standards of support and flexibility on the trail. For group sizes of eight or more guests, we add an assistant guide throughout your adventure, to ensure a personalized and safe experience.Extensions and Local Exploration
Are trip extensions available before or after Argentina and Chile Patagonia Hiking with Premier Lodging?
Yes, we offer several exciting ways to extend your journey. Pre-tour options in Argentina include a Buenos Aires Extension or combining Buenos Aires with either a ranch or an Iguazu Falls experience. You can also join a cruise through the fjords of Tierra del Fuego, packaged with land nights before and after and available either before or after the tour. Your Adventure Coordinator can help you book these, as well as arrange additional nights at Tierra Patagonia. What are the best things to do if I arrive early or stay late?

If you arrive early in El Calafate, you can explore the Glaciarium museum to learn about the region's ice fields or enjoy the shops and restaurants along the main street. In Buenos Aires, many guests enjoy exploring the chic Palermo Soho neighborhood, visiting historic plazas, or experiencing a traditional tango show. If staying extra nights at Tierra Patagonia, you can take advantage of the lodge's guided excursions, relax in the heated indoor pool, or enjoy a sunset wine tasting overlooking Lake Sarmiento.

Our most relaxed style of travel. Come prepared with flexibility and a spirit of adventure. Activities may include game drives along dusty or bumpy roads, canoe rides or river floats, sailing, or walks of up to 30 minutes on flat terrain. Trail conditions may include cobblestones, pavement, gravel, or dirt paths. On some days you may be on your feet for much of the time.

Easy-to-Moderate – Level 2

Active trips are appropriate for most travelers. You don’t need any previous kayaking, hiking, or other experience, but should be in generally fit condition. Trips may include short hikes or walking of up to 3 hours at elevations below 6,000 feet, sea kayaking in protected waters, or river rafting on Class I-II rapids.

Multi-Level – Level 2 & 3

These flexible trips are perfect for travelers seeking a range of activity levels, from easy to moderate, with two options to suit your preference and energy on the day. This type of trip also enables you to travel with friends who are more, or less, active than you, and either start or end the activity together. For example, Level 2 guests may choose a 3-hour hike while Level 3 guests may choose a 6-hour hike. This variety ensures that there’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a leisurely experience or a bit more of a challenge. No matter your choice, you’ll enjoy breathtaking scenery, unforgettable adventures, and plenty of time together as a group.

Moderate – Level 3

The majority of MT Sobek trips. These typically include 3 to 6 hours of physical activity per day, such as rafting or wilderness camping. Moderate-to-Challenging – Level 4

Trips for experienced travelers seeking full days of activity and a higher level of physical challenge. Hikes and treks of up to 14 miles and 4,000 feet of elevation gains and losses per day cover steep, sometimes rugged terrain, potentially into areas of exposure and elevations exceeding 10,000 feet. River rafting trips include Class IV-V rapids; sea kayaking trips include 4 to 5 hours of paddling per day in areas of open water with waves and tides.

Ultimate Challenge – Level 5

Our most demanding trips for guests seeking a physical challenge. Trips include trekking without vehicle support over steep, often rugged terrain at elevations over 10,000 feet. Daily hikes of up to 12 hours or more may include substantial altitude gains and losses into remote areas of wilderness. River rafting trips include Class IV-V rapids and areas where portaging is needed. Previous experience, as well as a completed physician’s certificate, is required.

By pairing the legendary trails of Los Glaciares and Torres del Paine with exclusive luxury lodges, we provide an immersive Patagonian experience that recharges the spirit through breathtaking scenery and gourmet local cuisine.

Legacy of Expertise: With over 40 years of experience in the region, MT Sobek crafts a shorter, perfectly paced itinerary that highlights the best of both Argentine and Chilean Patagonia.

Premier Accommodations: Retreat each evening to exceptional stays, including a perfectly situated hotel in the mountaineering hub of El Chalten, Relais and Chateaux EOLO Lodge in the vast Patagonian steppe near El Calafate, and the award-winning Tierra Patagonia Hotel and Spa in Torres del Paine.

Gourmet Immersion: Savor modern Patagonian cuisine paired with select Argentine and Chilean wines, including wine tastings and an open bar at Tierra Patagonia.

Easygoing – Level 1

Eight to ten-mile hikes can reach up to 10,000 feet and may include some steep ascents or descents. River rafting trips include Class III rapids and sea kayaking trips to visit protected waters.
